Lions family golf event aids Leader Dog effort

CRANBERRY TWP — A minigolf outing later this month will aim to raise money for blind members of the community.

The Cranberry Township Lions Club is raising money for Leader Dogs for the Blind during the 10th-annual Family Mini-Golf Outing, set for noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 25 at Fun Fore All on Route 19 in Cranberry Township.

For $10 per person, the event includes golf, lunch, and prizes. Golfers will have a chance at a hole-in-one prize, along with a closest to the pin challenge. Additionally, kids ages 12 and under will receive a gift bag and $5 Fun Fore All game room card.

Cash donations are especially welcome as are volunteers, or those interested in becoming a Lion.

The Leader Dogs for the Blind organization aims to enhance mobility and independence for people who are blind and visually impaired. Proceeds from the outing will support the Cranberry Lions’ efforts to pay for leader dog training, which costs $40,000 when training and the cost of the guide dog are factored in.

Last year’s event raised more than $2,000. Over the past 18 years the Cranberry Lions have donated more than $30,000 to the Leader Dog program. All funds raised are donated back into the community. In its 35 years of existence, the club has distributed well over $250,000 to charitable projects and programs. The club donates both time and money to local charities such as the Butler Blind Association, Camp Kon-O-Kwee and the VIP Sports camp for visually impaired children at Slippery Rock University.
