MARS — Mars Mayor Gregg Hartung knows he has the support of the community in pursuing funds to build a Mars Discovery Center in the borough.

Now, he wants elected officials at the state level to know as well.

The borough has applied for a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program application to seek funds to build the center in town. It would focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education andgive children and their families a way to explore science and space travel.

According to RACP guidelines, the project request must be at least $1 million. Mayor Gregg Hartung said $2 million is being sought for the project.

As the amount of money available for RACP projects is being discussed in Harrisburg, Hartung is asking the community to reach out to Gov. Tom Wolfe, Sen. Scott Hutchinson and Rep. Daryl Metcalfe to voice their support for the project. He said by calling or emailing and simply offering that backing could go a long way in helping the project progress.

“We’ve been told it’s helpful if it sounds like the community is backing it,” he said.
