Adams bomb scare a false alarm

The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called to investigate a suspicious package at an Adams Township building Wednesday.
Suspicious package was rent check from a disgruntled tenant

ADAMS TWP — A suspicious package that resulted in the evacuation of a township building Wednesday was found to be a rent check from a disgruntled tenant.

A building at One Adams Place on Seven Fields Boulevard was evacuated shortly before noon Wednesday. The building is owned by A.R. Building Co. and houses various businesses.

According to Robert Scanlon, Adams Township assistant police chief, a package was sent to the building Wednesday addressed to A&R Building Co. The box contained another box, which contained a 4-by-4 inch item wrapped in red duct tape with a note on top.

“That made it suspicious in nature,” Scanlon said.

The Allegheny County Police Bomb Squad was called to the facility as the building was evacuated. The parking lot was virtually empty by 12:15 p.m., with a few vehicles and several law enforcement officials remaining on scene.

Entrances to the facility were blocked by law enforcement, and a fire truck was stationed across the road in the Giant Eagle parking lot. Seven Fields Boulevard remained open as officials awaited a bomb squad unit, and no surrounding businesses appeared to be affected.

Bomb squad members X-rayed the item, and were unable to determine what it was. They took the item outside, where they dismantled it, Scanlon said, and found it to be a tin, wrapped in wire, containing a rent check and glitter. Scanlon said officials with the company indicated it was from a disgruntled tenant who had disagreed with a final payment.

Entrances to the building were reopened by about 12:45 p.m., and the bomb squad and remaining officers cleared the area soon after. Officers from Adams Township, Mars and the Evans City/Seven Fields police department assisted in the incident.
